City of Heroes Lives: How Homecoming Brought Back a Dead MMO

    Running Since
    2019 (public)
    Cost
    Completely free

City of Heroes officially shut down in 2012, and that was supposed to be the end. But here we are in 2026, and the game has more active players than some live-service titles. Homecoming made that happen.

    The Homecoming Story

For years after the shutdown, fans thought CoH was gone forever. Then in 2019, a private server went public, the community exploded, and suddenly the game was back.

What makes Homecoming special isn't just that it exists. The team has been actively developing new content, quality-of-life improvements, and balance changes. This isn't a museum piece. It's a living game with regular updates.

    Why People Still Play

City of Heroes did character creation different. The costume system is still unmatched in the genre. You can spend hours designing your hero before you even pick a power set. And with dozens of archetypes and hundreds of power combinations, no two characters play the same.

The gameplay loop hits different too. You're not grinding the same raid for months. You're running missions, taking down villain groups, and actually feeling like a superhero. The sidekick system means you can team up with anyone regardless of level.

    Getting Started

Homecoming runs multiple shards to handle the population:

    • Excelsior - Highest population, best for finding teams
    • Torchbearer - Second most active
    • Everlasting - Unofficial RP server
    • Indomitable - PvP focused
    • Reunion - EU-friendly timezone

Download is free, no subscription, no cash shop. The team runs entirely on community donations.

Is It Worth Playing in 2026?

If you never played CoH, you're in for a treat. The graphics are dated, but the gameplay holds up. And if you're a veteran who lost your characters back in 2012, the nostalgia hit is real.

The community is genuinely helpful. Global chat is active, people run newbie-friendly task forces, and there's none of the toxicity you might expect.
